Monza from Chevrolet was a subcompact car to seat 4 passengers and was manufactured by GM’s Chevrolet division for model years 1975 to 1980. Based on the Chevrolet Vega, Monza shared its width, wheelbase, 2300cc inline-4 engine (140 CD). Initially Monza was destined to carry the GM-Wankel rotary engine, but the idea was dropped owing to poor fuel economy and CO2 emissions compliance problems. This was substituted with a fuel-efficient V8 4.3 Liter engine. The Opel Ascona C Latin American version also carried the name of Monza. Monza Town Coupe and Monza 2+2 was competing with other sporty coupes which also included the Ford Mustang II. Oldsmobile Starfire and Buick Shyhawk of H-body variants were manufactured utilizing the Monza 2+2 body grille with Buick’s 3.8 L V6 engine and trim variations. The Pontiac Sunbird variant unveiled in the next model year was also offered in both Monza Town Coupe and Monza 2+2 eventually.
