Renault was making studies and researches and was successful in releasing the high-performance hatchback automobile in 1980. It is interesting to note that this car was originally intended for rallying but made its mark as a street version too. 3576 units of Renault Turbo 5 were produced during its 4 years production run. There was a front-mounted engine in the normal Renault 5 but the Turbo 5 included a mid-mounted 1397 cc Cléon turbocharged engine which was placed behind the driver in a mid-body.
It was presented for sale as a 2-door hatchback and the engine developed 160 metric horsepower. Later on a Renault 5 Turbo 2 was also introduced when the factory pushed the engine output up to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) for the Critérium des Cévennes. It was in 1981 when the Turbo 5 made its mark in the World Rally Championship. The same car also stood at number nine on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s.
