Renault Dauphine dates back to the production run of Renault in 1956 when the first Dauphine was manufactured. It was a rear-engined economy car which was offered for sale in only one body style: a three-box, four-door sedan. More than 500,000 units of this version were manufactured by 1954. The engineering of the Dauphine began in 1949 and it was known as “Project 109”.
It was due to using new and updated laboratories and some specially designed tracks that the new version gave maximum speed, acceleration, braking and fuel consumption as well as handling at the same time. There was a four-cylinder engine installed in the earlier models of the car. By 1954, a second series of prototypes incorporated updates, using the older prototypes for crash testing. Dauphine had a 3/4-speed manual transmission installed in it and its bod style was 4-door sedan. Renault offered the Ondine with a 4-speed transmission from 1960 to 1962.
