Volvo S40 was manufactured by Volvo of Sweden from 1995 to 2012. It was introduced as a small family car and it had a front engine layout with either 4-wheel drive or front wheel drive. The S40 was preceded by Volvo 440/460 and was eventually overtaken by Volvo V40. The first generation comprised of Saloons the S representing the saloon in S40 and the V40 was released as estate, and the V stood for versatility. Second generation released in 2004 was named the V50. In 2012 the S40 range was replaced by V40 5-door hatchback models. First generation lasted till 2004 and it was manufactured in different places like the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and Malaysia. Mitsubishi Carisma and Proton Waja were related to S40 and it was available in petrol and diesel versions and transmission options include 4-speed and 5 -speed automatic and 5-speed manual gearbox. It was the first car to score 4 star rating with euro-NCAP.
