The production of the Renault 6 was started in 1968 and it was a small family car whose production continued until 1980. Originally it was presented for sale as an alternative to Renault 4 and as a competitor to Citroën Ami 6 and the recently launched Citroën Dyane. Although it had a few similarities with the Renault 6 but it surely was more efficient than that. It also used the R4 platform as well as its 845 cc engine and was technically near-identical.
Design wise, it can be compared with the Renault 16 and the body style was a 5 door hatchback. However in the first two years of production, it was criticized by car enthusiasts that it used the same R4-derived engine's lack of power in the heavier R6. It underwent a kind of facelift when it came back with new square headlights, new rear lights, a black plastic grille, and new bumpers.
