Volvo 200 series was manufactured from 1974 to 1993 and classified as executive cars by Volvo. It was termed as mid-sized cars in the US and a tremendous 2.8 million Volvo cars from this series were sold throughout the world during the above period. This series was an update for the 140 series and Jan Wilsgaard was the common designer for both models. Though they were having the same body makeup they differed in technical specifications and safety measures. In 1982 its production overlapped with the Volvo 700 series, but the popularity of the 200 did not diminish its sale and it survived another decade with 240. 1974 was the introduction year for Volvo 240 and 260 series and the 240 was the top selling vehicle till 1982 since its induction. It only had the small Volvo 66 and the 300 series as its competitor in Europe during that time. Production was the series ended May 1993 after a long period of 20 years for the 200.
