Volvo 480 | show original size
The Volvo 480 was the first front-wheel-drive vehicle made by Volvo. The model was based on the 460/440 platform for 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback but produced only one model. It had a strange feature of 3-door hatchback with 4-seat and sandwiched between an estate and liftback. In the Europe it was a coupe and for the US a 2+2 sports wagon as it was sold in 1987 fall. Production took place in Born, Netherlands and was carried out till 1995. It took six years to develop and bring the 480 to production. The model was shown at the 1986 Geneva Auto Show and made available to owners in 1987. When it was introduced Volvo described it as a sporty model with 4 seats and front wheel drive Volvo. The car experienced leakage issues and it was not unusual to find water filled spare wheel wells in it. However, the handling was good in the 480 and it was attributed to the suspension from Lotus.
